March is our wettest month with 4.8" of rain on average - October our driest with 2.7". The area gets a rare dusting of snow and a much much more rare tropical storm or hurricane. We are justified in being proud of our lawns and gardens. The town lies along the southern edge of gardening zone seven. The area supports many plants seen in the North such as Bearded Iris, Daffodils and Tulips which will all return for many years. After they bloom in the spring our gardens put forth profuse displays of wisteria and fragrant honeysuckle , jasmine, and gardenias and stand upon stand of brilliant day lilies all of which delight in our mild winters. We also find it easy to grow many tropicals with Hibiscus, Bougainvillea and Bromeliads finding themselves right at home until fall when they can be treated as annuals or offered winter protection. Our Banana Trees come back each year but often don't have time to set fruit. Our lawns are brilliant green in spring and normally dry out in mid summer without extra water. Our palms are for the most part Sawgrass Palmettos but some hardier tropical palms can be coaxed in winter protected spots. We are known for our pecan harvests, our local peaches, strawberries, melons and tomatoes but many other fruits, nuts and vegetables can be grown here as well. |
